help wild creatures...at the zoo!

May 7th, 2022

Yes, there are giraffes, lions, bears, zebras and prairie dogs..but not all of the creatures that live at Zoo New England live behind bars, walls or other enclosures!   At this special weeding event, we'll help the WILD birds and beneficial insects that call Zoo New England home.

Zoo New England is located on a 72-acre campus in Boston's Franklin Park. We will remove invasive plants that are negatively impacting biodiversity on zoo grounds, and ultimately harming the WILD creatures that call the zoo home, including migratory

song birds, at-risk bumblebees and Monarchs and other butterflies.

Rain or shine, we'll meet at 8:30 am and spend 2 hours hand pulling or digging non-native invasive plants such as

Garlic Mustard and Black Swallow Wort.

After weeding, all volunteers will be free to enjoy the zoo for the rest of the day!

  • May 7th 2022 8:30 - 10:30 am
  • No experience necessary: we will show you the plants we're targeting and best techniques for weeding
  • Families with young kids are welcome but those under age 15 must be accompanied by an adult
  • Please wear long pants, long sleeves and bring gloves.
  • Each group is asked to bring 1 or 2 heavy duty plastic garbage bags (invasive plants can't be composted).
  • Volunteers need to be able to walk to designated weeding areas ( 10-15 minutes) and to be able to bend over to reach weeds
  • Exact meeting spot will be emailed to you after sign up
